Flanagan describes this film as his least scary work, aimed at conveying a life-affirming narrative amidst apocalyptic themes. The cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Mark Hamill, and Jacob Tremblay, among others. Hiddleston has noted the film's underlying optimism, presenting moments of magic against a backdrop of societal disintegration. Flanagan, who has previously adapted King's works, independently produced the film, believing its unique premise might not find backing from traditional studios.
