Swiss Voters Approve Burqa Ban Effective 2025

Switzerland's contentious 'burqa ban', which prohibits facial coverings in public spaces, will take effect on January 1, 2025, following a 2021 referendum that narrowly passed with 51.2% support. Offenders could face fines of up to 1,000 Swiss francs (approx. $1,143), but exceptions are made for health, safety, cultural customs, and artistic performances. The ban does not apply in airplanes, diplomatic premises, or places of worship. Proponents argue it aims to ensure public safety, while critics, including Muslim organizations, have condemned the measure as discriminatory. The Swiss Federal Council has clarified that administrative fines can be paid on-site, with a maximum penalty for non-payment being the standard fine. This initiative follows a history of similar measures in Switzerland, including the 2009 minaret ban.
