Maryland Teen Released After 121 Car Break-Ins Sparks New Looting
A 16-year-old Maryland teenager was arrested for allegedly breaking into 121 vehicles across multiple counties in one night but was released just five hours later due to the state's classification of the crimes as "lower level" and his lack of a prior record. Laurel Police Chief Russ Hamill expressed frustration, emphasizing that the release allowed the teen to return to the environment enabling these crimes and jeopardized public safety. Police recovered nearly 20 sets of car keys, credit cards, and other evidence linking the teen to the break-ins, and two accomplices have been identified and are expected to be arrested soon. Despite requests from Laurel Police and the State Attorney's Office to hold the teen in juvenile detention, the Department of Juvenile Services declined, citing the non-violent nature of the offenses. The day after the teen's release, 17 additional vehicle break-ins were reported, raising further concerns among authorities. This case highlights systemic issues in Maryland’s juvenile justice approach to handling extensive property crimes by minors.
