Tyla Wins Second MTV VMA Best Afrobeats Award
South African singer Tyla won the Best Afrobeats award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards for her song "PUSH 2 START," marking her second win in the category following her 2024 win for "Water." At the ceremony held at UBS Arena in New York, she made a fashion statement wearing a vintage beige Chanel mini-dress from the 1993 spring collection, accessorized with gold medallions. Tyla praised the competition and expressed excitement about her upcoming album and new songs, including "Chanel" and a duet with Nile Rodgers. During her previous VMA win, Tyla spoke about the challenges of being categorized solely under Afrobeats, highlighting the diversity of African music beyond the genre. Other notable winners at the event included Lady Gaga, who won four awards including Artist of the Year, while performers such as Mariah Carey and Ricky Martin were also featured. Tyla's win continued to highlight African talent alongside nominees like Tems, Burna Boy, and Rema.
