Man Sentenced for Attack on Judge

Deobra Redden, 31, was sentenced to 26 to 65 years in prison for attacking Las Vegas District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus during a sentencing hearing on January 3. The incident, which was captured on video, showed Redden vaulting over the judge's 4-foot-high bench and grabbing her by the hair, causing her to fall against a wall. Redden pleaded guilty but mentally ill to charges of attempted murder, arguing his untreated paranoid schizophrenia influenced his actions. During sentencing, Judge Susan Johnson described the attack as an assault on the judiciary, rejecting requests for a concurrent sentence. Redden's defense highlighted his mental health issues, stating he was off his medication at the time of the attack.
