Former Liverpool Midfielder Willie Stevenson Dies Aged 85
Willie Stevenson, a former Liverpool midfielder and two-time First Division champion under Bill Shankly, has died at the age of 85. Stevenson made 241 appearances for Liverpool during the 1960s, scoring 18 goals, and was a key figure in the club's first-ever FA Cup win in 1965. Signed from Rangers in 1962, he played in the 1966 Cup Winners' Cup final and was known for scoring the crucial penalty in the 1965 FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea. Stevenson was a regular starter, missing only nine league matches in his first four full seasons, and his final appearance for Liverpool came in 1967. Liverpool FC and Stoke City, where he later played, both expressed sadness at his passing. Stevenson reflected on his career with pride, highlighting his achievements across Scottish and English football.
