Two Skiers Killed in Oregon Avalanche, Third Found in California

A tragic avalanche in Central Oregon has claimed the lives of Terry and Renee Skjersaa, a couple well-known in the local skiing community, as they were skiing near Broken Top. According to authorities, the avalanche occurred at an elevation of 6,700 feet on a south-facing slope, and the couple was found buried in the snow after failing to return as expected. Deschutes County Sheriff Kent Van derKamp emphasized the importance of avalanche preparedness and urged outdoor enthusiasts to heed safety warnings, given the moderate to considerable avalanche danger in the area. Friends used a phone app to locate the couple after they didn't return, leading to a search and recovery operation. The Skjersaa family has a longstanding legacy in the region, dating back to 1939 when their grandparents opened Bend's first ski shop. This incident follows another avalanche-related death in California, highlighting the ongoing risks associated with backcountry skiing during variable weather conditions.
