Spain Women Appoint Sonia Bermudez Head Coach After Euro 2025 Defeat

Spain's women's national football team has replaced head coach Montse Tome with former player Sonia Bermudez following their loss to England in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final. Tome, who became Spain’s first female senior team coach in September 2023 after serving as Jorge Vilda’s assistant, led the team to victory in the inaugural Women’s Nations League in 2024 but saw her contract not renewed after the Euro defeat. Bermudez, a decorated former player with nine league titles and international experience, had been coaching Spain’s U23 team prior to her promotion. She will be assisted by Iraia Iturregi, another former player with extensive coaching and playing experience. The decision was made by the Royal Spanish Football Federation board amid restructuring following the Luis Rubiales scandal. The federation expressed gratitude to Tome for her professionalism and dedication during her tenure.
