Flint Water Crisis Settlement Payments Instructions Expected This Fall

Eligible claimants of the Flint Water Crisis settlement, totaling more than 25,700 individuals including over 13,000 children, will receive instructions this fall on how to obtain their payments through an official payment portal managed by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The Flint Water Settlement Fund, the largest civil settlement in Michigan's history, remains under sole court control, with no authority granted to lawyers, city officials, or the state. Court-appointed Special Master Deborah Greenspan emphasized that no payment letters or requests for bank information have been sent yet, warning claimants to avoid scams and to contact her office if they receive suspicious requests. The settlement fund includes contributions from the state, city insurers, McLaren Flint Hospital, Rowe Professional Services, and a $53 million addition from Veolia North America, with ongoing litigation against the EPA potentially increasing funds. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel expressed relief that the payment process is progressing and urged caution among claimants to protect their funds from scammers. Despite delays and complexities in the claims process, officials and legal representatives are working to ensure payments are issued fairly and promptly.
