LA County Employee Charged with Hate Crimes Against Asian Co-worker
Bhavin Patel, a 42-year-old employee of the Los Angeles County Counsel office, has been charged with multiple felony hate crimes after allegedly making death threats against an Asian co-worker and burglarizing the County Hall of Administration three times to place threatening messages intended to instill fear. He faces three felony counts each of criminal threats, second-degree burglary, and violation of civil rights, with a potential sentence of up to 13 years and four months in state prison. The incidents occurred on August 25, 26, and September 4, and Patel was arrested with bail set at $575,000, which he posted; his arraignment is scheduled for November 4. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman emphasized zero tolerance for hate crimes and the importance of a safe workplace, while County Counsel Dawyn Harrison highlighted the county's commitment to combating harassment and creating an inclusive environment. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating the case, which will be prosecuted by the Deputy District Attorney in the Hate Crimes Section. Authorities have commended the swift investigation and pledged to ensure justice and safety for the victim and the county's diverse communities.
