Ampyr Australia Acquires Shell's Stake in 1GWh Battery Project
AMPYR Australia has acquired Shell Energy Australia's 50% stake in the Wellington Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), gaining full ownership of the project. The Wellington BESS, planned for New South Wales, has a total capacity of 1,000 megawatt-hours and consists of two stages, with stage one expected to be operational by 2026 and stage two by 2027. This acquisition allows AMPYR to expedite development, enhancing energy reliability and supporting renewable energy integration in Australia's National Electricity Market. CEO Alex Wonhas emphasized the project's role in delivering reliable, cost-competitive electricity, critical for Australia’s economic growth. AMPYR aims to establish 3 gigawatts of energy storage capacity in Australia by 2030. The parent company, Ampyr Energy, is also developing significant projects globally, targeting a broader energy transition.
