China Sets Ambitious Renewable Energy Goals
China has surpassed its clean energy production targets six years ahead of schedule, achieving a total capacity of 1,206 gigawatts from solar and wind sources. The country now generates approximately 14% of its electricity from these renewable sources and plans to build an additional 8-gigawatt solar power plant alongside a coal power plant in Inner Mongolia. China's aggressive expansion in renewable energy is supported by its state-led industrial policy, with more than 40% of the world's installed solar capacity attributed to the nation. By 2025, over 26 provinces have set ambitious energy storage targets, expecting a total capacity of 86.6 gigawatts. Despite coal generation still meeting some of the increasing electricity demand, the growth of renewables is expected to lead to a decrease in coal use by 2024. Overall, China is making significant strides towards its goal of peak emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.
