Multiple Cities Enforce Youth Curfews Amid Rising Violence

Several U.S. cities are responding to rising youth violence by enforcing and promoting curfews to enhance safety. Detroit police are emphasizing the importance of curfews, citing incidents involving juveniles, including an accidental shooting by a 15-year-old and fires set by a 13-year-old, urging parents to take responsibility for their children's whereabouts after hours. Similarly, Oklahoma City launched the #InBy10 initiative, a three-month grassroots campaign led by clergy, city leaders, and law enforcement, encouraging parents to ensure youth are home by 10 p.m. to reduce gun violence, which has surged among young people during late-night hours. Rev. Derrick Scobey, a coalition leader, stressed the life-or-death stakes of parental oversight, noting the program's goal of collective community responsibility without additional costs. Internationally, Ghana’s Ministry for the Interior imposed a curfew from 2 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Nalerigu and surrounding areas after fatal shootings at a high school, coupled with a ban on weapons possession to restore peace. These actions reflect a broader effort to curb youth violence through curfews and community engagement across different regions.
