Grand Island Woman Charged with DUI, Child Abuse after Vehicle Crashes into Platte River

A Grand Island woman, Karni Metcalf, faces multiple charges after crashing her vehicle into the Platte River while intoxicated with her children inside. Metcalf, 28, was reportedly driving three and a half times the legal limit when she struck a concrete retaining wall, causing her car to enter the river. Deputies responded to multiple reports of her reckless driving before finding her standing in the water next to her submerged vehicle. Fortunately, the children were rescued unharmed, and Metcalf was treated for injuries before being arrested. She has been charged with DUI, child abuse, and transporting a child while intoxicated, with a preliminary hearing set for March 5. Metcalf's bond was set at 10% of $5,000 following her arrest.
