Paul Merson warns Oliver Glasner not right fit for Manchester United role amid leadership speculation
Paul Merson has warned Manchester United against appointing Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner despite the Austrian’s remarkable turnaround at Selhurst Park—FA Cup and Community Shield wins and an 18‑match unbeaten run—because Glasner’s preferred three‑at‑the‑back system demands players United do not currently possess. United have endured a poor start to the season and Ruben Amorim is under growing pressure after inconsistent results, though minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reported to want to give him a full season. Glasner is among the bookmakers’ favourites for the Old Trafford job and would likely find the role irresistible, but Merson says the move would be a significant risk for both manager and club. Glasner himself stresses systems should suit available players and points to his tactical flexibility from previous roles, but Merson remains unconvinced that Palace’s methods could be transplanted successfully to United.
