Rebecca Cheptegei, a Ugandan Olympic marathon runner, tragically died from severe burns after being attacked by her ex-boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, who has also succumbed to his injuries. Cheptegei was set alight during a dispute over land in Kenya, suffering burns to over 80% of her body, while Ndiema sustained burns covering 30% of his body. The incident occurred on September 1, and prior to his death, police were preparing to charge Ndiema with her murder. Following Cheptegei's death, the International Olympic Committee's president expressed deep sorrow over the loss of an inspiring athlete. An inquest into their deaths has been opened, as the criminal case against Ndiema is now moot due to his passing. Cheptegei is scheduled to be buried in her ancestral home in Uganda on Saturday.
