Daryl Hall Rejects Yacht Rock Label Calls Genre a Joke
Daryl Hall, the Hall & Oates frontman, has openly criticized the 'yacht rock' genre label, calling it a "joke" that originated from an online mockumentary by two Californians and later became an unexpected music category. He contends that the music branded as yacht rock is essentially mellow R&B with some jazz influences, and he resents being pigeonholed into this subgenre, as he and John Oates deliberately avoided conventional music labels. Hall expressed frustration that the term "yacht rock" and others like "soft rock" fail to accurately describe his work, which has often been misjudged by the industry and audiences trying to categorize it. Despite Hall's rejection, his bandmate John Oates acknowledged the positive impact of the yacht rock mockumentary series in revitalizing interest in Hall & Oates' music. The genre label, which emerged from the 2005 Yacht Rock web series and inspired the 2024 documentary Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary, has also faced criticism from other artists like Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen, who expressed disdain for the term. Additionally, some sources note that only a small portion of Hall & Oates' catalog actually fits the yacht rock criteria, supporting Hall's view that the label is an inaccurate oversimplification of their music.
