Lava Covers Blue Lagoon Parking Lot in Iceland

Lava from a volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland has completely covered the main parking lot of the popular Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, impacting its operations. The eruption, part of ongoing volcanic activity in the region, forced the evacuation of nearby Grindavik and the Blue Lagoon late Wednesday. While the parking area, accommodating around 350 vehicles, is now engulfed, the hot pools remain safe due to protective barriers. Heavy machinery is being utilized to reinforce these barriers as the lava continues to flow steadily towards the site, but no immediate threat to the lagoon itself has been reported. Blue Lagoon officials are currently assessing the situation and have begun relocating hotel guests to safer accommodations. The volcanic activity in this region has intensified since March 2021, marking a new era of eruptions.
