A 53-year-old man from Preston, Russel Smith, has been charged with attempted murder following the stabbing of a British Transport Police officer at Preston railway station on September 7. The officer was on duty during the BBC Radio 2 in the Park festival when he was seriously assaulted around 9:30 PM. Paramedics attended to the officer, whose injuries are believed to be non-life threatening or life changing. In addition to the attempted murder charge, Smith has also been charged with possession of a bladed article. He has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear at Preston Magistrates Court. The incident led to a temporary closure of the Fishergate entrance of the station as police managed the situation.
