Moldova Declares State of Emergency in Energy Sector
The Moldovan government has declared a state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days, starting December 16, 2024, due to the imminent risk of gas supply disruptions from Gazprom, particularly affecting the Transnistrian region. Prime Minister Dorin Recean highlighted that Moldova will no longer rely on Gazprom for gas transit through Ukraine starting January 1, 2025, exacerbating the energy crisis. The Cuciurgani thermal power plant in Transnistria, which operates on Russian gas, could be severely impacted, potentially leading to a humanitarian crisis. Moldova's ability to import gas from Romania is limited, as Romania's energy system is also under pressure. Concurrently, Transnistria has introduced its own emergency measures amid fears of gas shortages, aiming to conserve energy resources. Gazprom's willingness to negotiate alternative gas transit routes remains contingent on Moldova's repayment of historical debts, complicating the situation further.
