Sanjay Leela Bhansali Reflects on Filmmaking Journey

Sanjay Leela Bhansali credits his successful entry into Bollywood to Vidhu Vinod Chopra, under whom he worked as an assistant director for eight years. He revealed in an interview that his path to the film industry was challenging, facilitated by the intervention of Chopra's ex-wife, Renu, and his sister, Bela Segal. Initially dismissed by Chopra, Bhansali eventually earned his place and describes the experience as transformative, stating, 'He made me iron and steel.' Reflecting on his humble beginnings, Bhansali emphasized the significance of his early life in a small chawl, which shaped his perspective and creativity. Since then, he has directed several iconic films, including 'Devdas' and 'Heeramandi', and is currently working on 'Love and War', set to release in 2026.
