Phillip Maile, a 65-year-old father from Worthing, West Sussex, tragically died after contracting necrotising fasciitis, a rare flesh-eating bacteria, while on holiday in Oludeniz, Turkey. The infection began from a minor cut he sustained on a rotten wooden plank during a day trip to Saklikent Gorge. Despite medical advice that swimming in the sea would be beneficial, his condition rapidly worsened, turning his leg black and blue. Doctors attempted to save him by amputating his leg twice, but he succumbed to the infection after five weeks in the hospital. His daughter Charlotte now raises awareness about the dangers of such infections and advises immediate medical attention for wounds causing unusual pain. She plans to run the Abingdon marathon to support the Lee Spark NF Foundation, dedicated to necrotising fasciitis awareness and support.
