Multiple Drone Incursions Disrupt Scandinavian Airports Amid Russia Involvement Suspicions
Several unidentified drones caused a major disruption at Copenhagen Airport, forcing a shutdown of airspace and halting flights for several hours, which Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described as the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date. Authorities, including NATO's Secretary-General Mark Rutte, have not confirmed who was responsible, but the incident fits a pattern of recent drone incursions and airspace violations across Europe linked to Russia, including in Poland, Romania, and Estonia. Denmark and other Nordic countries like Norway have experienced similar drone-related airspace closures, leading to tens of thousands of passengers being stranded. While Russian involvement has not been definitively proven, Frederiksen did not rule it out, stating the activity seemed intended to disrupt and test responses. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied any Russian involvement, calling the accusations unfounded and emphasizing that Russian military aircraft comply with international law. Danish police described the drone operators as capable and possibly demonstrating their skills without intent to cause direct harm, and they chose not to shoot down the drones due to safety concerns near the busy airport.
