Two sailors, a man and a woman, were rescued from their yacht, the Spirit of Mateship, after it experienced mechanical failure and began taking on water about 185 kilometers off the coast of Nowra, NSW. The distress signal was detected around 12:40pm AEST on Monday, leading to a multi-agency rescue operation involving helicopters, Royal Australian Navy ships HMAS Arunta and HMAS Canberra, and the NSW Police vessel Nemesis. Severe weather conditions initially hampered rescue efforts, causing the stranded sailors to endure a harrowing night at sea. The NSW Police vessel Nemesis successfully rescued the sailors at approximately 7:30am on Tuesday. Both individuals were reported to be uninjured despite the challenging conditions.
