Storm Amy Threatens UK and Ireland with 100mph Gusts
Storm Amy, the first named storm of the season, is sweeping in from the Atlantic and has prompted amber and yellow warnings across the UK and Ireland for very strong winds and heavy rain. Northern and western Scotland and Northern Ireland are expected to be worst hit, with gusts possibly exceeding 95–100 mph in exposed locations and widespread gusts of 50–70+ mph across much of northern and western Britain; London is likely to see around 50–51 mph. Forecasters warn of danger to life, power cuts, structural damage and widespread travel disruption including ferry, rail and school closures. Western Scotland faces intense rainfall (around 30–50 mm in a few hours/6–9 hours) and parts of Ireland — notably County Roscommon — are forecast to receive 80–100 mm in 48 hours. Local authorities in Roscommon have closed civic amenities, advised limiting travel and reported power faults. Officials are urging people to heed warnings, secure loose items, avoid non-essential travel and monitor updates as forecasts are refined.
