Clemson Appoints Cal ACC Co-Coaches Howell, Crandall-Howell

Clemson University has hired husband-and-wife duo Justin Howell and Elisabeth Crandall-Howell as co-head coaches of its women's gymnastics program, replacing Amy Smith after two seasons. The Howells, previously at the University of California, Berkeley, built Cal into a national contender, culminating in a runner-up finish at the 2024 NCAA Championships and earning 2025 ACC Co-Head Coaches of the Year honors. Both coaches signed five-year contracts with an annual salary of $225,000 each, approved by Clemson's Board of Trustees Compensation Committee. Clemson Athletic Director Graham Neff praised their technical expertise, operational approach, and emphasis on athlete health and development, expressing high expectations for the program's future. The coaching change follows controversy surrounding Smith, including allegations of a toxic culture at her previous positions and an NCAA violation during her tenure. The Howells expressed excitement about leading Clemson's program and leveraging the university's resources to pursue national championship-caliber competition.
