Suspect Charged in Five Points South Shooting

Damien Laron McDaniel, a 22-year-old man from Fairfield, has been arrested and charged with multiple homicides, including a mass shooting in Birmingham's Five Points South that left four dead and 17 injured on September 21. He faces one count of capital murder for the mass shooting, alongside 17 counts of first-degree assault, and is also implicated in the murders of Diontrante Brown and Jamarcus McIntyre within three days of the shooting. Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond stated that over 300 tips from the community played a crucial role in the investigation, which remains ongoing as more suspects may be involved. McDaniel is currently held without bond, and three other individuals have also been charged in relation to McIntyre's death. The police have not disclosed a motive for the shootings, but they are reportedly connected to a larger investigation into local crime and drug trafficking. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin emphasized the city's commitment to justice and public safety following the tragic events.
