Wong Criticizes Russia-North Korea Security Pact

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has condemned the recent security pact between Russia and North Korea, asserting that it destabilizes regional peace and involves North Korea supplying weapons to Russia in 'flagrant violation' of U.N. Security Council resolutions. During her visit to Paju, near the Demilitarized Zone, she expressed concerns about the escalating military cooperation, particularly the June agreement allowing both nations to provide immediate military support if either faces aggression. Wong's statements align with those of the U.S. and its allies, who have accused both countries of breaching international laws regarding arms trade. Despite denials from Pyongyang and Moscow regarding arms transactions, Wong emphasized the need for regional cooperation to counter these threats. Her visit follows participation in ASEAN and Quad meetings, highlighting Australia's commitment to strengthening ties with South Korea and addressing security challenges posed by North Korea. She is scheduled to meet with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul to discuss bilateral cooperation and the North Korean situation.
