Russian Court Sentences Navalny's Lawyers to Prison
Three former lawyers for the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny were sentenced to prison for participating in an 'extremist organization,' with terms ranging from 3.5 to 5.5 years. The lawyers, Vadim Kobzev, Alexei Liptser, and Igor Sergunin, were accused of relaying messages from Navalny while he was imprisoned, allowing him to continue his political activities. Their trial was conducted behind closed doors, a move criticized as part of a broader crackdown on dissent in Russia, especially following Navalny's designation as a terrorist and extremist after his death. Only Sergunin pleaded guilty, while the others denied the charges. The sentencing, which coincided with the anniversary of Navalny's return to Russia and subsequent arrest, drew attention to the increasing repression faced by those associated with him. The lawyers will also be banned from practicing law for three years after serving their sentences.
