Matthew Tkachuk expressed deep sorrow over the death of his close friend and former teammate Johnny Gaudreau, who, along with his brother, was killed by a suspected drunken driver while cycling in New Jersey on August 29. Tkachuk, at the Florida Panthers' media day, highlighted Gaudreau's exceptional talent, stating he was the most offensively gifted player he had ever seen. The two shared a strong bond during their six seasons as teammates in Calgary before their professional paths diverged in 2022. Gaudreau and his brother were tragically killed just before they were to serve as groomsmen at their sister's wedding. The driver responsible faces multiple charges, including two counts of death by auto. Tkachuk noted that tributes for the brothers would continue, especially as the Panthers prepare for an emotionally charged game against the Blue Jackets on October 15, the first home game since Gaudreau's death.
