Judge John Judge highlighted that Latah County's small population made it likely that jurors would have connections to the case, thus affecting jury impartiality. The new presiding judge for the case is Steven Hippler, who will rule on various motions filed by Kohberger's defense team, including attempts to eliminate the death penalty as a sentencing option. Kohberger had spent 620 days in Latah County Jail before his transfer. His defense team had argued that a fair jury was unlikely to be found in Latah County, prompting the successful motion for the venue change.
