Wales Plans Independent Deposit Return Scheme

The Welsh Government has decided to move forward with its own Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), opting out of the UK-wide initiative due to unresolved issues related to the United Kingdom Internal Market Act 2020. Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies emphasized the importance of including glass bottles in the scheme, a point of contention with the previous UK Conservative government, which barred their inclusion. Despite withdrawing from the joint process, Wales aims to implement a DRS that enhances its already high recycling rates and supports a transition to reuse. The government plans to engage with industry stakeholders to develop a scheme that aligns with international best practices. This decision reflects a broader commitment to a circular economy and seeks to build upon Wales's existing recycling achievements.
