Wisconsin Pizzeria Accidentally Intoxicates 85 Customers With THC-Laced Pizza
In late October 2024, Famous Yeti's Pizza in Stoughton, Wisconsin, inadvertently served pizzas made with THC-infused cooking oil, resulting in 85 customers experiencing symptoms of marijuana intoxication such as dizziness, anxiety, hallucinations, and paranoia. The incident occurred after the restaurant ran out of its own cooking oil and used oil from a shared kitchen where another vendor produced hemp-derived THC edibles, with the only THC warning being a label on the oil cap. Seven individuals were hospitalized, including children, but all affected patrons, aged 1 to 91, eventually recovered without complications. Health officials, including Public Health Madison & Dane County and the CDC, investigated the event and found it was accidental, with no criminal charges filed. The restaurant owner expressed deep remorse and temporarily closed the establishment for cleaning before reopening. The CDC emphasized the importance of clear labeling and secure storage of THC products to prevent similar incidents as THC-infused products become more widely used.
