Typhoon Shanshan Devastates Kyushu, Japan
Typhoon Shanshan, one of the strongest typhoons to hit Japan in decades, made landfall on Kyushu island, causing widespread damage and disruptions. The storm, which has now weakened to a tropical storm, led to torrential rains, landslides, and floods, resulting in at least five deaths and dozens of injuries. Authorities issued their highest alert levels and advised over five million people to evacuate, although only a fraction complied. The storm disrupted transport, including the suspension of bullet trains and the cancellation of flights, and left hundreds of thousands without power. Record rainfall was reported in several prefectures, with some areas receiving up to 791.5 millimeters (31 inches) in 48 hours. Emergency services continue to monitor the situation, especially in areas at risk of further landslides and floods.
