Wolfsburg Appoints Paul Simonis as New Head Coach
VfL Wolfsburg has appointed Paul Simonis as their new head coach on a two-year contract, aiming to revitalize the club after a difficult Bundesliga season. Simonis, 40, previously led the Dutch club Go Ahead Eagles to a historic KNVB Beker victory—their first major trophy in 92 years—and achieved their best league finish in decades during his first head coaching role. He replaces Ralph Hasenhüttl, who was dismissed with two games remaining, with interim coach Daniel Bauer having guided the team to an 11th-place finish. Wolfsburg's managing director for sport, Peter Christiansen, praised Simonis for fitting the club’s requirements and bringing fresh impetus, highlighting the intensive selection process. Simonis had extended his contract with Go Ahead Eagles until 2027 but chose to move to Wolfsburg after impressing in negotiations and beating other candidates, including FC Copenhagen's Jacob Neestrup, in the race for the position. Wolfsburg will begin pre-season training in July, with Simonis eager to compete in the strong Bundesliga league.
