Family Rescued After Getting Lost in Red River Gorge Using iPhone SOS Feature

A family of three, including a small child, was rescued in Red River Gorge after getting lost while hiking and using the iPhone Emergency SOS feature to alert authorities. The family became disoriented after venturing onto the lengthy Osborne Bend Loop and ran out of daylight, prompting them to use the SOS feature, which works via satellite on iPhone 14 and newer models even without cellular service. Emergency responders received the family's coordinates and located them about 2.5 miles from the Bison Way Trail Head, finding them cold but unharmed. Search and rescue officials emphasized the importance of hikers learning how to use the Emergency SOS feature, as this was the second recent incident where it aided in a rescue. They also recommended basic hiking safety measures such as notifying someone of your plans, bringing maps, and packing sufficient supplies. The incident highlights how modern technology, alongside traditional precautions, can enhance safety during outdoor activities.
