Monsoon Floods Kill 46 Across Pakistan, Forecasters Warn More Rains
A week of heavy monsoon rains and flash floods across Pakistan has resulted in at least 46 deaths and dozens of injuries, with fatalities reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan provinces. Among the deceased were 13 members of a family of 17 tourists swept away by the swollen Swat River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where rescuers continue to search for a missing victim. Officials, including Irfan Virk of the Pakistan Meteorological Department, have warned of above-normal rains during the monsoon season and cautioned that a repeat of the devastating 2022 floods—which killed over 1,700 people and inundated one-third of the country—cannot be ruled out. Pakistan's vulnerability to climate change, accelerated glacier melting, and its agriculture-dependent economy exacerbate risks from such extreme weather events. The slow response by emergency services to recent incidents has faced widespread criticism online. Authorities have issued alerts urging precautionary measures to mitigate further disaster during this monsoon season.
