UK Government Revises Football Governance Bill
The UK Government announced that parachute payments, which are financial aids provided to Premier League clubs that are relegated to the Championship, will now be included in the independent regulator's assessment for television cash settlements between the Premier League and the EFL. This decision reverses the previous exclusion of these payments from the Football Governance Bill, which is set to be strengthened in Parliament on Thursday. The revised Bill will also mandate clubs to engage effectively with fans regarding ticket pricing and to enhance transparency on their equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) efforts. EFL Chairman Rick Parry has criticized parachute payments for creating an uneven playing field in the Championship. While the Premier League acknowledges some positive aspects of the Bill, it expresses concerns over potential negative impacts on competitiveness and investment in talent. The changes are seen as a significant victory for fans and the EFL, enhancing the regulator's role in maintaining financial stability across the football pyramid.
