Transport Safety Advocates Urge Mandatory Vehicle Features

Leading road safety organizations, including Brake and AXA UK, alongside over 50 groups and individuals, have collectively urged Transport Secretary Louise Haigh to prioritize vehicle safety by adopting the latest safety technology in new cars. The call is for implementing the Vehicle General Safety Regulation updates, which have been in effect in Europe, to enhance safety features like intelligent speed assistance and driver assistance systems. By making these safety measures mandatory, it is estimated that over 1,700 deaths and 15,000 serious injuries could be prevented in the UK over the next 16 years, with potential savings of up to £7 billion in health costs. The move aims to significantly improve road safety for all users and reduce the societal and economic impacts of road crashes.
