Researchers Reveal Ancient Tattoos on Peruvian Mummies

Recent research utilizing laser-stimulated fluorescence (LSF) technology has revealed intricate tattoos on 1,200-year-old mummies from Peru's Chancay culture, showcasing designs with remarkable precision. The study examined over 100 mummified remains, finding tattoos with fine lines measuring just 0.1 to 0.2 millimeters thick, which were previously invisible due to fading. Researchers noted that these tattoos often featured geometric patterns similar to those found in Chancay pottery and textiles, indicating a rich cultural artistry. While the LSF method successfully unveiled these hidden details, some experts have raised concerns about the study's methodology and its claims of superiority over traditional imaging techniques. This discovery provides valuable insights into the cultural significance and craftsmanship of ancient tattooing practices in pre-Hispanic South America. The findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
