No Charges in Adam Johnson Hockey Death

No criminal charges will be filed against Sheffield Steelers player Matt Petgrave, who was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after the on-ice incident that led to the death of Nottingham Panthers' Adam Johnson in October 2023. Johnson, a former NHL player, died after his neck was accidentally cut by Petgrave's skate during a collision at Sheffield's Utilita Arena. The Crown Prosecution Service and South Yorkshire Police concluded there was not a realistic prospect of conviction after a comprehensive review. The incident, witnessed by thousands, led to new rules mandating neck guards in English ice hockey. Petgrave, who had been on bail during the investigation, expressed deep sorrow and called the death a tragic accident, receiving support from some fellow players. Authorities extended condolences to Johnson's family and confirmed no prosecution will proceed.
