Kentucky state Senator Johnnie Turner, 76, died on October 22 from injuries sustained during a lawnmower accident where he plunged into an empty swimming pool on September 15. After the accident, he was hospitalized and later transferred to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he fought to recover but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Turner served in the Kentucky legislature since 2021 and previously from 1999 to 2002 after a career as an attorney and U.S. Army medic. Senate President Robert Stivers expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting Turner's dedication to public service and his community in Eastern Kentucky. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also paid tribute, recalling Turner's hands-on approach to helping constituents in times of need. Despite his passing, Turner's name will remain on the ballot as he was preparing for re-election.
