A Sudanese delegation, led by Minerals Minister Mohamed Bashir Abu Namo, has arrived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for discussions with US officials regarding upcoming ceasefire negotiations in Geneva scheduled for August 14. This meeting aims to address conditions for the Sudanese government's participation in the talks aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has lasted for 15 months. While the RSF has accepted the invitation to attend, the Sudanese government has outlined several preconditions, insisting that any negotiations must precede discussions on the RSF's actions. The talks will be co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and involve multiple regional and international observers, including the African Union and the UN. The Sudanese government has expressed its commitment to achieving peace and stability but insists on addressing issues related to the RSF's conduct before proceeding. The conflict has led to significant casualties and displacement, with nearly 18,800 deaths reported and millions displaced since it escalated in April 2023.
