Multiple Michigan Veterans and Community Leaders Die September 2025

Several notable individuals from Michigan recently passed away, each remembered for their unique contributions and lives. David Chernick of Bark River was known for his strong work ethic, love for poetry, and family devotion. Terrell "Terry" Ostrander of Marquette was celebrated for his warmth, humor, and close family ties, despite a year-long battle with cancer. John R. Raade, a Vietnam veteran from Iron River, served in the U.S. Navy and was honored for his military service. John W. Michalek of Iron River was remembered for his long marriage and roots in Michigan communities. Lastly, Harlan D. "Smitty" Smith of Escanaba had a distinguished 50-year career in construction, exemplifying dedication and hard work.
