US-Russian Peace Talks Commence in Riyadh

A Russian delegation arrived in Riyadh to participate in US-brokered peace negotiations aimed at achieving a ceasefire in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Prior discussions between US and Ukrainian officials were described as 'productive' by Ukraine's Defence Minister, who emphasized the need for Russia to cease its strikes. The Russian team is led by Grigory Karasin, a seasoned diplomat, and Sergei Beseda, a veteran of the FSB, both of whom are under Western sanctions. The meetings, held behind closed doors at the Ritz-Carlton hotel, are focused on determining parameters for various ceasefire proposals. Despite a temporary agreement to halt attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, both sides continue to accuse each other of violations, complicating the peace process.
