Romania Offers NATO Air Bases for Ukraine Security Guarantees

Romania’s Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has firmly ruled out sending troops into Ukraine but has offered the country's military bases to NATO allies, including the United States, as a key contribution to ensuring lasting peace in Ukraine. Romania’s NATO-operated air bases are already used for aerial patrols, air policing missions over the Black Sea, and joint military exercises, highlighting the country's strategic role on NATO’s eastern flank. European leaders have urged US President Donald Trump to deploy F-35 fighter jets to Romania to strengthen security guarantees for Ukraine, a move supported by Romania’s willingness to provide access to its military infrastructure. Romania’s Ministry of National Defense emphasized the nation’s role as a reliable ally committed to multidimensional support for Ukraine, participating fully in allied decisions while adhering to international treaties and domestic laws. US President Trump has confirmed American participation in a system of security guarantees for Ukraine but emphasized that European partners should bear the primary responsibility, while ruling out sending US troops to Ukrainian territory. Discussions on security guarantees involve creating a mechanism reflecting some NATO principles without granting Ukraine direct membership in the Alliance, with Romania playing a pivotal role through its military support.
