Liverpool Retires No. 20 for Diogo Jota
Liverpool Football Club will retire Diogo Jota’s No. 20 shirt across all teams, marking the first such gesture in the club’s 133-year history. Jota and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash in Spain, reportedly caused by a suspected blown tire and possible excessive speed, with authorities still investigating. The decision to retire the number was made in consultation with Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family, to honor his achievements and personal impact, including helping Liverpool win their 20th English league title. Liverpool will commemorate Jota before their next match with a rendition of 'You’ll Never Walk Alone,' a wreath-laying ceremony, a minute’s silence, digital tributes, and black armbands. Club CEO Michael Edwards called the move a 'unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person,' reflecting widespread grief and respect. Jota, who joined Liverpool in 2020, was deeply loved at Anfield and is remembered as 'forever our number 20.'
