Sweden modernizes 64,000 nuclear bunkers for 7 million amid WW3 fears

Sweden is modernizing its extensive civil defense bunker system, which includes 64,000 shelters capable of accommodating approximately seven million people, following heightened tensions from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) has initiated inspections and renovations of these shelters to ensure they can withstand nuclear, chemical, and biological threats, with the modernization project expected to take two to three years. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized the need for preparedness, stating that while Sweden is not at war, there is no peace either. Following its NATO membership in March 2024, Sweden has committed to increasing military spending from 2.4% to 3.5% of GDP by 2030, marking the largest defense increase since the Cold War. The nation has also renewed its 'total defense' strategy, which integrates civilian and military efforts for national security. This response is part of a broader European trend, with neighboring countries also enhancing their defense readiness amid escalating geopolitical tensions.
