Janusz Walus to Be Deported to Poland

Janusz Walus, the assassin of South African anti-apartheid leader Chris Hani, is set to be deported to Poland following the end of his parole period, as confirmed by government officials. Walus, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the 1993 murder, was released on parole in 2022 after a Constitutional Court ruling. His South African citizenship was revoked in 2017, necessitating deportation upon completion of parole. The African National Congress and Hani's family have expressed dissatisfaction with his release and raised concerns about the lack of accountability regarding Hani's assassination. In response to these concerns, a request for an inquest into Hani's death has been referred to the Department of Justice. The government has communicated with Hani's family regarding the situation.
