Tanzania Electoral Commission Clears Opposition Leader Mpina For 2025 Presidential Race
Tanzania’s senior opposition leader Luhaga Mpina of the Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT-Wazalendo) was reinstated as a presidential candidate for the October 29 election following a High Court ruling that overturned his earlier disqualification by the Independent National Electoral Commission. Mpina’s reinstatement injects new momentum into the race, challenging incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan of the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, who had faced only minor opposition after the exclusion of other major opposition figures. The exclusion of the largest opposition party CHADEMA, along with the treason charges against its leader Tundu Lissu, has drawn criticism of Hassan’s administration amid accusations of political suppression, which she denies. Mpina has emphasized the constitutional right of opposition parties to participate in politics and rejected the notion that opposition politicians are criminals, calling for respect for democratic processes. Despite a delayed campaign start compared to other parties, Mpina expressed confidence that the remaining 45 days are sufficient for a robust campaign across Tanzania. The political developments highlight growing tensions and a contested electoral environment as Tanzania approaches its 2025 presidential election.
